Threads of Time, The Fabric of History Profiles of African American Dressmakers and Designers 1850 to the Present

Black Style Now

Black Style Now at The Museum of the City of New York (Sept. 06 - Feb 07). A ground breaking exploration of hip-hop culture and the black fashion revolution. A bold exhibition that explored the African American contribution to fashion and design and the transformative impact it�s had on contemporary culture. The exhibit was dynamic and diverse, bold and colorful, a sweeping collage of clothing, accessories, photos and other items that symbolized the entrance of black style into the mainstream.

Gown Description: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, 2006. Silk dupioni bustier gown with spaghetti straps, decorative patchwork panel, brown cording and cowrie shells. Inspired by the batik paintings of Zimbabwe.

The 2007 Fashion Icons

The 2007 Fashion Icons Fashion Show was held was held on Feb. 24, 2007, in Atlanta, GA, in honor of Black History Month and showcased the African-American influence in the fashion industry. The fashion show was the culmination of the Pepsi and Macy�s South celebrations and featured leading African-American designers including Master Tailor Gentleman Jim McFarland, menswear designer Shaka King, bridal designer Therez Fleetwood, and shoe designer to the stars Etu Evans.The entire event and the rich history of these designers will be documented and celebrated year round on a web site honoring African-American designers and their influence on fashion today.

Pink Ribbon Couture Supports The Cause

Aiding in the fight for breast cancer, wedding gown designer, Therez Fleetwood, helps to raise money by offering custom made dresses designed with the survivors in mind.

According to the American Cancer Society, Inc., Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. The chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a women�s life is about 1 in 8 (13% of women). Though breast cancer reaches all cultural and racial groups, women in North America have the highest rate of breast cancer in the world.

Did you know that is was Therez Fleetwood who designed the only Afrocentric costumes worn by Mickey and Minnie Mouse at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida? Yes, a regal touch of kente cloth was added to their wardrobes in 1993. Both Mickey and Minnie each have over 100 themed and special event costumes in their wardrobe.

Fashion Africana

Produced by Utopia Model Agency and co-presented with Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and the 2004 Carnegie International, the AACC presented Fashion Africana 2004, a global celebration of design, dance and music. The evening paid a unique tribute to "The Lost Boys of Sudan," Sudanese refugees who journeyed from the war-torn African region to American shores and have found a home in Pittsburgh.

Fourteen fashion and jewelry designers presented custom-created fashions inspired by the journey of these brave young men. The audience was wowed by designs influenced by the culture of the Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya and America. The show finale featured a wedding gown by bridal designer Therez Fleetwood. The red and yellow wedding gown was inspired by the authentic costumes worn by the married women of Sudan. Her designs combines African influences with European silhouettes that bring together different cultures in a way that is very fashion-forward.
